BEHAVIORAL INTERVENTIONIST
The Behavioral Interventionist functions as a part of a multidisciplinary team providing integrated service to students attending Beacon Day School. Under the administrative direction of the Special Education Teacher, support the academic instruction, and communicate with school personnel concerning the needs of special education students.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

An employee of this classification is responsible for supporting the specialized academic services provided to the students enrolled at Beacon Day School Special Education program, as well as collaborating with their parents. An employee will also serve as a professional resource for other personnel.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Essential duties and responsibilities of this class include but are not limited to:

  • Assists with student behavior management on the vans to and from school.
  • Writes and reviews Special Incident Reports (SIR).
  • Communicates with staff any necessary student information pertinent to maintaining the school's positive teaching and behavioral environment.
  • Works in the classroom with staff and students on a rotating basis to prevent crisis situations.
  • Model appropriate professional behavior at all times.
  • Using Professional Assault Crisis Training (pro-ACT) techniques identifies and appropriately responds to any verbal and physical containment situations as needed.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of Positive Behavior Support Plans
  • Supervise Behavior Interventionists' implementation and collection of data to ensure consistency of the intervention strategy
  • Enter student data into a database that will track academic and behavioral progress
  • Attends professional workshops and meetings to promote professional growth
  • Assist in organizing and participating in community-based outings
  • If needed conduct meetings relevant to classroom activities and management
  • Maintains a safe psychological and physical classroom environment
  • Collaborates with school personnel in the coordination of medical care protocols if necessary
  • Provides relevant information to the teacher for quarterly progress reports and reports for use in annual Individualized Education Plan (IEP)
  • Performs other related duties as required

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS

Knowledge of:

  • A variety of modern methods, techniques and practices in special education and behavior management
  • Fundamental principles and accepted trends in the field of special education
  • Understanding the physical, intellectual, social and emotional growth patterns of students
  • Understanding of various laws of the State of California, district and school policies and procedures

Key Competencies:

  • Customer Focus / Handling Complicated Situations / Initiative and Innovativeness / Professional / Technical Expertise / Listening / Reading Comprehension / Oral Communication / Safety Focus / Dependability / Analysis and Problem Solving

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Associates of Arts Degree or higher.
  • Experience in classroom and/or behavior management preferred.
  • Appearance, grooming, and personality that provides a positive role model for students.
  • Must meet Department of Educational employment requirements for hire; Department of Justice Fingerprints, previous employment verification, provide proof of a current driver’s license, Department of Motor Vehicle driver’s printout, two forms of identification as required by the Department of Justice.
